Osterville is known for fantastic beaches and ocean views. Cycling is one of the best ways to discover the village and the surrounding areas. Go on a bicycle tour and stop by these local attractions.
- Skunknett River Wildlife Sanctuary
The river gets its name from the Algonquin word for “a fishing spot for eels,” which populate the waterways. The sanctuary’s trails meander around the river and through an Atlantic White Cedar swamp, offering breathtaking views of Osterville’s natural beauty.
Keep an eye out for the ospreys and black-crowned night herons that call this place home. You might also catch a glimpse of migrating ducks in the West Pond in the spring.
At 100 acres, the sanctuary gives you a lot of ground to cover. Just keep in mind that you must stay on trails at all times. You can ride your bike up until you hit the trails, at which point you’ll have to explore the rest of the sanctuary on foot
- Dowses Beach
This magnificent beach offers countless opportunities for fishing, swimming, sunbathing, and beachcombing. This peninsula beach features rock jetties and a spacious viewing dock. It also offers stunning views of the water, as well as ample parking. Ride your bike to Dowses and get ready for sand, sun, and surf. The sand is full of seashells, so don’t forget to wear aqua shoes on your visit.
- Armstrong-Kelly Park
As the largest privately owned park in the village, this green space features exquisite gardens, covered walkways, and scenic trails. It’s also home to numerous plant and tree species, but the rare franklinia tree is the park’s crowning jewel. Other highlights include the John Folk Water Garden and the Garden of Verses.
You’ll find benches and picnic tables throughout the site, making it ideal for a quiet afternoon with family. Dogs are also welcome, but they must be on a leash. Owners must carry dog bags with them at all times.
- Joshua’s Pond
One of the bigger pond beaches in Cape Cod, Joshua’s Pond has pebbly sand, calm waters, and breathtaking views. There’s plenty of room for beach activities like kayaking, sun tanning, picnicking, and playing beach volleyball and Frisbee. The area is rarely crowded, making it a great spot for some rest and relaxation. Go on a leisurely stroll along the shoreline, watch the kids play in the water, and leave your worries behind. The beach is located about half a mile from the village.
- Micah’s Pond
Known as a popular swimming hole, Micah’s Pond is also a great fishing spot. Largemouth bass, pumpkinseed sunfish, and pickerel swim in its waters. If you’re feeling adventurous, try dangling from the 35-foot rope suspended above the surface.
Located on a 100-acre parcel less than a mile from Osterville, this lake is surrounded by trees and serene trails. Go hiking or biking and enjoy the views. Micah’s is somewhat remote, but you’ll find it off Pond Street near Joshua’s Pond.
- Osterville Farmers Market
Ride your bike to the seasonal farmers market at the Osterville Historical Museum campus. Vendors sell fresh produce and other wares each Friday from June to September. Buy heirloom vegetables, fresh fruit, herbs, cut flowers, sausages, and more. Click here for a list of vendors for 2017.
